Cañon City, CO — The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) is announcing plans to begin the demolition of the Captain’s House at the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility (CTCF) on January 27, 2025. This project is expected to take several days and is part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and enhance the facility’s property in partnership with the Museum of Colorado Prisons.

The Captain’s House, located between the Museum of Colorado Prisons and the Associate Warden’s House (the turret house), has been deemed structurally unsafe, posing significant safety risks. The building has remained closed to the public due to these concerns and does not hold a formal historical designation.

The Captain’s House has long been a part of the CTCF property, serving as a reminder of the rich history of corrections in Cañon City. While its deteriorated condition prevents the preservation of the structure, CDOC has collaborated closely with the Museum of Colorado Prisons to preserve items of historical significance from the house. These artifacts have been transferred to the museum to ensure that the legacy of the Captain’s House is honored and available for public education Once the demolition is complete, the land will be leased to the Museum of Colorado Prisons, which plans to transform the area into a green space for visitors.

The CDOC and the Museum of Colorado Prisons are committed to minimizing disruption during the demolition process and ensuring the safety of everyone in the area.
