Buena Vista’s Chris Hutchings didn’t have much time to consider the environment before stepping onto the mat at the Pepsi Center on Friday morning, but his 9 AM match would set the tone for the day for Buena Vista.
The sophomore decked in red, white and blue would finish his match with a third period pin to advance to the semifinals and guarantee him a podium finish tomorrow night on Championship Saturday.
Along with Hutchings, the Demons pushed another member of the squad into the finals, as Micah Hertrich won his match with a slow methodical pace, taking it 9-3 by the time the final whistle blew.
Both Hutchings and Hertrich will face off with Wray Eagles in the semifinals tonight, with Chris battling Brady Collins of Wray, while Micah will take on Emmanuel Huerta.
Six other Demons are still alive at the tournament, with wins from Jackson Helmke, Isaac Hutchings, Seth Moss and Jim Gabriel. Chris DeLuca and Hayden Camp fell in their semifinal matches, but are still wrestling tonight in the consolation. David Arellano and Kaden McFee saw their tournaments come to a close.

Not much action on the mats for the Salida Spartans on the day. Only Collin King would have a match in the morning session, and he would fall by pin in the second period.
Drew Johnson is still alive after receiving a forfeit in his consolation first round after his opponent failed to make weight.
Action begins again tonight at 5:00 with the beginning of the consolation quarterfinals.
