One man was killed and two others were rescued after an avalanche in Gunnison County over the weekend.
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center says the three men were caught in an avalanche Friday afternoon in upper Rapid Creek, southwest of Marble. Two men were extricated and transported for medical treatment. Their conditions are not known.
The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office along with various search and rescue organizations located the third man Saturday morning and recovered his body from four feet of avalanche debris. He has been identified as 36-year-old Joel Thomas Shute.
Another skier was killed in a large avalanche just outside Aspen Highlands ski resort yesterday. Sheriff’s officials say three skiers were caught in Sunday’s avalanche. Two managed to escape.
There have been eleven reports of people caught or carried in avalanches is the past week.
