The artist, who brought controversy to Fremont and Chaffee Counties with his proposed ‘Over the River’ project, has died.
Christo died yesterday at the age of 84. No cause of death was given.
For 20 years, millions of dollars were invested in the vision of OTR, which was debated and created several legal battles and heated public meetings. The project included 6 miles of silvery, luminous fabric panels to be suspended above the Arkansas River between Salida and Canon City.
The opposition group ‘Rags Over the Arkansas River’ never gave up its fight to stop the project. Christo canceled OTR in January, 2017.
