As part of Denver’s COVID-19 response, Mayor Michael Hancock announced a stay-at-home order Monday.

The order goes into effect at 5 pm on Tuesday, March 24th, and will last through at least April 10th.

“If you are sick, stay home,” Hancock said. “If you are not sick, you also need to stay home.”

The challenge, Hancock revealed, is that Denver is the densest area in the state and has the highest number is cases. Because of that, the City and County of Denver needs to take extra steps to protect public health and safety, and added that Denver hospitals support much of the state, including people in mountain towns and on the eastern plains.

Parks will remain open, but organized activities and sports are prohibited. Hancock said the crowded parks in Denver over the weekend helped him make his decision.

Under the order:

  • Breweries must close.
  • No picnics or organized games in parks.

Allowed under the order:

  • Getting groceries
  • Purchasing liquor and marijuana
  • Obtaining medical supplies or medication
  • Engaging in outdoor activities like walking, hiking or running, while continuing the strict observance of social distancing.

Hancock isn’t asking for voluntary compliance. “This is not a recommendation,” he stated. “This is an order.”
