High Country Bank warns that scammers are “spoofing” bank phone numbers to try to steal online banking passwords and personal information.

“Caller ID Spoofing” is when someone calling your phone deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. Normally your display indicates the phone number and name associated with the line used to call you, but there are services that allow scammers to display any spoofed caller ID.

According to High Country Bank, the scammer will call the victim while spoofing a phone number that belongs to the bank. They will tell the victim that they have noticed unusual activity on the victim’s bank account and urgently request additional information to correct the issue. This can include online banking logon credentials, debit card numbers, and bank account numbers. The fraudster will use the stolen information to create unauthorized transactions on your account.

High Country Bank will never request online banking passwords. We may ask for you to verify personal identifying information following a request initiated by you but will never contact you to request this information.

When in doubt, hang up and call High Country Bank at 719-539-2516. If you feel that you have provided information to an unauthorized source, please call 719-539-2516 immediately.
