Children ages 5-11 may now receive Pfizer pediatric vaccine doses to protect against COVID-19. Elementary school aged children have the highest case rate of any age group in Colorado right now. Hospitalizations among children are rare, but they do happen, and viral spread among children contributes to viral spread in the community as a whole. The vaccine’s safety and effectiveness has been studied in clinical trials with thousands of children ages 5-11. Authorities reviewing the trial data determined that risks of COVID-19 illness outweigh the potential risks of vaccine side effects. No serious side effects have been identified in this study. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends vaccination for all children and adolescents 5 years of age and older who do not have contraindications. If you have concerns, talk with your pediatrician.
