The Arkansas River is setting flow records, reaching levels seen only a few times in the past 30 years. As of now, Pine Creek and the Numbers sections are at 3,700 cubic feet per second (CFS), Browns Canyon is at 4,470 CFS, and the Royal Gorge is at 4,860 CFS. These unprecedented high water levels have led to an increased presence of debris, posing significant hazards to river users.
Given these conditions, all sections of the river should be navigated with heightened awareness and stringent safety precautions. The Salida City staff and contractors have been closely monitoring the Scout Wave in Salida’s Whitewater Park to track its transition from a standing wave to a crashing wave, which was confirmed at 3,200 CFS. Consequently, the city urges extreme caution for all river users. Surfing in the river park is currently not recommended, and boaters are advised to use the bypass channel on river left.
As the FIBArk Whitewater Festival kicks off on Thursday, featuring a variety of land and river events, concerns are rising about whether the Hooligan Race will proceed. The Salida Fire Department, responsible for making this determination, will announce their decision early Saturday morning.
