Salida, CO – September 11, 2024 – At 11:38 a.m. on Wednesday, the Salida Fire Department
(SFD) responded to a report of a gas leak at the intersection of Chilcott Street and Blake
Avenue. Upon arrival, crews discovered that a 2-inch high-pressure gas line had been damaged
during ongoing construction work in the area.
SFD crews promptly assessed the situation and initiated the evacuation of a two-block radius as
a precautionary measure. Natural gas leaks present the risk of gas migrating into nearby
homes, which can pose serious hazards. Firefighters deployed handlines and conducted checks
of natural gas levels in surrounding residences to ensure the safety of the public.
The Salida Police Department provided traffic control around the affected area, and Chaffee
County EMS personnel were on standby to offer medical assistance if needed. Atmos Energy
was called to the scene to repair the damaged gas line.
The incident was resolved safely, with no injuries reported. The swift and coordinated response
by all agencies involved ensured the safety of the community and the successful mitigation of
the gas leak.
