The changing of the month means the changing of the art at The Steamplant’s Paquette Gallery.

For August, the feature artist will be Sarah-Jane Maynard who mixes nature and faces in a unique blend.

Feature Artist Sarah-Jane Maynard

Maynard has been in Salida since 2017, and in her artist statement says:

“I used to create one-of-a-kind seed-beaded jewelry sold under the name “Bitchin’ Beads.” I have since dabbled in encaustic works sold through the Encaustic Institute in Santa Fe and I recently began working on manipulating my photographs using my computer.

In today’s world, human nature is often depicted as dark, especially in newscasts and through social media. I wanted my work to show the lighter side, the beautiful side of human nature. Some of my pieces show reflections of the original work, giving the viewer a different perspective. I am hoping my work will inspire others to see the best of both humans and nature.”

The exhibit won’t just be available to people who come to see it in person either. If socializing isn’t quite your cup of tea yet, the Paquette Gallery will also be moving it’s exhibits online, allowing the shows of local artists to be more visible in this current time.

“As with many cultural institutions around the state and elsewhere, the Salida SteamPlant has moved one of its popular assets – the Paquette Gallery – online for its monthly exhibitions and has added a new feature exhibition section as well. Given the rich history of talented artists throughout the Arkansas River Valley, this new offering provides a unique platform for others to discover these talents without having to leave their home.”

Statement from The Salida Steamplant

A big part of this to Maynard isn’t just in showing off her work, but she is also looking to give back. To her, The Steamplant is a favorite venue to attend for a wide variety of events. That is why all proceeds from the show will be going directly back to The Steamplant.

The artist will be holding a reception on August 6th from 5 to 7 pm at the Steamplant. Music will be provided by Bruce Hayes.
