In the short amount of time that the wave has been open, users are already starting to cause erosion along the riverbank.
This issue would have worsened with increased use this summer, so the stairs were built to help protect the riverbank going forward.
They were constructed with 6×6 treated lumber using an overlapping design and construction. Imported boulders were used for the retaining walls, and crusher fine material was laid over the stair pads. The staircase is behind the Scout Hut in Riverside Park and leads directly to the new wave.
Surfers and spectators will now have a safe, easy, and environmentally healthy way to access this portion of the river. The riverbank restoration on the north side of the wave involved planting 12 trees, laying biodegradable aspen fiber matting, spreading native grass seed, and surfacing the trail access with crusher fines.
