The 2020 Colorado high school football season will not take place until March of 2021 after the Colorado High School Activities Association made their announcement about the upcoming season on Tuesday.
Local coaches haven’t had much time to react to the announcement, but the one constant from all of them has been the need to keep a positive attitude, and focus on the season that will be instead of the season that was supposed to be.
For Buena Vista Coach Matt Flavin, he said that attitude starts with the coaches and parents around the athletes. Flavin says that goes back to the attitude they preach on the football field regardless of the season. You can only control what is in front of you and the way you respond.
On the what if side of the coin, Flavin also said the momentum that could be gained for football players coming off of a successful basketball or wrestling season could make a difference on the football field. And the fact kids will have more time to develop and mature could bring a different flavor to the season.
And don’t get started on the weather. Although, while colder games will be the normal, there could be some fun involved as well, with snow and mud games possibly being more prevalent.
Salida’s Head Coach Matt Luttrell isn’t far off from Flavin in his thoughts moving forward.
Positivity and in Luttrell’s eyes, activity, will be crucial in the fall and early winter months for several reasons.
The biggest one to him is to keep momentum from summer workouts going, with Salida showing up with some of the best numbers for summer workouts since Luttrell has been the head coach.
Luttrell also says it will be important to keep the kids positive as well, and with something to strive for, stressing that his message to the team on Tuesday night was do something. If it isn’t a sport, lift. If it isn’t lifting, go run.
And that seems to be the big emphasis school wide when talking to coaches. Go out and be active so you can be ready for the resumption of the season come February 22nd.
