Next week, the Leadville Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service will begin forest health treatments in the area below Sugarloaf Dam near Turquoise Lake. The project aims to improve forest resilience and prevent future ecological damage.
During the operations, Forest Service Road 113 and the area south of the road will be closed until December 15th. The project spans nearly 14,000 acres, and the Forest Service says that the thinning treatments will help the forest withstand insect infestations and high-intensity wildfires for the next 20 to 30 years.
These proactive measures are crucial for maintaining the health and safety of the local ecosystem and surrounding communities.
