The Cotopaxi School District is facing a Colorado Open Meeting Law violation lawsuit filed by attorney Matt Roane.

According to the Wet Mountain Tribune, the lawsuit, filed on February 19, 2025, claims that during an executive session in June 2024, the Cotopaxi School Board improperly discussed a real estate purchase without listing the topic on the agenda.

While executive sessions are allowed for real estate discussions, Colorado law requires the agenda to clearly specify the reason for the session.

The school district had until March 19th to file a response but failed to do so.

Roane is also representing Wet Mountain Tribune publisher Jordan Hedberg in a similar lawsuit against the Town of Westcliffe, alleging Open Meeting Law violations.
