Classes Canceled for the Rest of the Week in Lake County School District

The Lake County School District, serving Leadville, Twin Lakes, and surrounding areas, canceled classes yesterday due to “safety concerns.” The district later announced that schools will remain closed for the rest of the week on the advice of Sheriff Heath Speckman after concerns arose Tuesday and continued into Wednesday morning.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported that an 18-year-old man was identified as a person of interest after a tip was submitted regarding school safety threats. The individual surrendered to authorities on an unrelated criminal warrant, was questioned about the threats, and released on bond. The sheriff’s office emphasized that the claim about the teen making the threats is still under investigation and has not been confirmed.
