Increased Flows Through the New Scout Wave Have Created a Dangerous Effect for Boaters

The new Scout Wave on the Arkansas River running through Salida created an ideal setting for surfers to take part in their sport however, with the spring runoff, increased flows have caused a dangerous hydraulic effect for unaware boaters.

The Salida Parks and Recreation Department has issued a press release providing an update on the Scout Wave in Salida’s Whitewater Park.

Salida Rec says, “Due to recent minor temporary modifications, current conditions at the Scout Wave are characterized by a green wave followed by a secondary feature. At this lower flow, the high-flow boater bypass on river left is not available. The recent work also included cleanup and restoration in the river. As river flows continue to drop this summer and fall, the river power at the feature will decrease. Standard whitewater safety equipment, knowledge, and scouting is always strongly recommended.”

“A permanent maintenance project is proposed at the Scout wave for this winter. The maintenance project will incorporate structure and bank modifications that are intended to improve boater passage, especially at high flows.”
