The Highway 50 bridge over Blue Mesa Reservoir will temporarily reopen for the July 4th weekend, providing relief to travelers in the area. Emergency vehicles and those traveling in smaller vehicles can begin crossing the Middle Bridge west of Gunnison today.
The bridge will be open 12 hours a day throughout the holiday weekend. However, starting Monday, July 8th, the bridge will open only twice daily as crews continue necessary repairs.
Passenger cars, pickup trucks, vans, motorcycles, and emergency vehicles are permitted to cross the bridge. However, heavier vehicles—including campers and RVs, trucks pulling trailers, semis, and buses—must take the County Road 26 detour.
The bridge shutdown was initiated in April after federal highway officials discovered a crack during an inspection. The temporary reopening aims to ease travel during the busy holiday period while ensuring safety and continued repair work.
