The first avalanche fatality of the season occurred yesterday on South Diamond Peak.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is reporting that a backcountry skier from Fort Collins died when she was caught and fully buried in an avalanche near Cameron Pass along State Highway 14.

Members of the 29-year-old woman’s party were able to dig her from the snow, but she did not survive.

The avalanche was described as 2 to 3 feet deep, very wide, and running close to 500 feet vertically.  There have been at least 185 reported avalanches in the state so far this season.
