A Fremont County judge yesterday found that there is sufficient evidence to establish probable cause to bind over two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of 83-year-old Carl Cooper and 75-year-old Susan Cooper.

42-year-old Michael Escobedo is accused of brutally killing the couple in their Howard home in December of 2022.

The couple’s bodies were discovered inside their residence in the 4000 block of County Road 4 after deputies were dispatched to the Howard area for a report of a structure fire in their neighborhood.

Fremont County Detective Bayley Sandefur said in court yesterday that DNA testing linked Escobedo to items inside the home, including a fireplace poker found on the floor.

Escobedo is slated for arraignment on January 16th.
