Escaped inmate Chancey Ray Colwell was returned to custody thanks to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department and the Canon City Police Department.

Chancey Ray Colwell escaped from the custody of the Teller County Detention Facility in Divide on Friday, August 6th, at approximately 2:55 am. Colwell was assigned as an inmate worker for the past 2 months and during the performance of his duties last night, managed to escape.

According to the Canon City Police Department, they received a Crime Stoppers tip that Chancey Coldwell was possibly in the 2000 block of Pear street. Canon City Police Officers from various units immediately immobilized to the area setting up surveillance in an attempt to locate the escaped prisoner.

Once Coldwell was positively identified, Canon City Police Department moved in and arrested Coldwell after a short foot pursuit. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the capture by mobilizing deputies and the regional tactical team.

In his press release, Teller County Sheriff Commander Sullivan wished to thanks to everyone that called in tips and the numerous individuals that assisted with this search. Sullivan added, “It is because of diligent community members that we were able to accomplish this mission so quickly.”

On Monday, August 2, 2021, Colwell was sentenced to 34 years in the department of corrections.
