Effective January 6, 2023, the Custer County Jail will close its doors and the Fremont County Jail will begin housing Custer County inmates and detainees.
On December 29th, 2022, the Custer County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to adopt a resolution closing the jail and approved an inter-governmental agreement with the Fremont County Jail, which has a capacity for about 240 inmates.
Three factors went into Custer County’s decision—the cost per day of housing an inmate, the age and condition of the jail and the expected unfunded mandates to be adopted by the 2023 Colorado Legislature.
Custer County will pay Fremont County $120 per day per inmate housed.
