The Custer Count Sheriff’s Office has received a very large amount of fraud and identity theft reports recently which have resulted in thousands of dollars lost.
In most scams, elderly populations are targeted most, and in most cases recovering the money is impossible.
The Custer County Sheriff’s Office would like for you to share with your family and friends preventative steps you can take, like:
- If it seems to good to be true, it is.
- Someone you don’t know contacts you unexpectedly.
- Bad grammar, spelling, heavy Indian/middle eastern accents are common.
- Any transaction relating to PayPal, MoneyGram, Western Union or Cryptocurrency.
- Any request to pay in an unusual way, such as with a gift card.
- You are being asked for bank account information, remote access to your computer, social security number, or driver’s license number.
Scams can be extremely clever. Targeting emotions such as guilt and greed are their primary tactics. If you have any doubt at all, hang up.
