Colorado Parks and Wildlife has announced that five more gray wolves have been released onto public land in Colorado in Summit and Grand Counties last Friday.
The agency released the first five wolves in Grand County a week ago. Of the now 10 wolves in Colorado, four are male and six are female. CPW says they intend to introduce a total of 15 wolves by mid-March of 2024.
The wolves were captured in Oregon where CPW veterinarians and biologists evaluated them, collected genetic material – tissue and blood samples – before fitting each with a GPS collar for tracking. The wolves were given vaccines and then placed in crates and flown to Colorado for their release into the wild.
The controversial reintroduction of gray wolves to Colorado comes three years after voters approved a plan following a statewide ballot measure.
