The state of Colorado has officially set the rules surrounding the use of psilocybin, better known as magic mushrooms. While the administering of these treatments at healing centers is not expected to begin until 2025, the groundwork for how they will be regulated is now in place.

Under the newly established rules, patients will not be allowed to take psilocybin products home. Instead, the treatments must be administered by licensed facilitators at designated healing centers. Each session will be carefully monitored and will last a minimum of three hours, with some sessions extending up to five or six hours, depending on the treatment plan.

The next step for the state is to outline the licensing and application fees for those who will facilitate these treatments. This marks a significant development in Colorado’s approach to alternative mental health treatments, as the state continues to pave the way for safe and regulated use of psilocybin.
