Colorado’s first human case of West Nile virus this year has been confirmed in Arapahoe County. State health officials are urging residents to take precautions, as this early occurrence is unusual for the season. While most people infected with West Nile virus do not experience symptoms, some can become seriously ill and even die. Individuals over 60 and those with certain medical conditions are at greater risk.

Last Year’s Statistics:

  • 631 cases across 40 counties
  • 383 hospitalizations
  • 50 deaths

Precautions to Protect Yourself:

  • Insect Repellent: Use products containing DEET
  • Avoid Peak Mosquito Hours: Stay indoors at dawn and dusk
  • Eliminate Standing Water: Avoid lakes, ponds, and other standing water sources
  • Protective Clothing: Wear long sleeves and pants to minimize skin exposure

Stay safe and take these measures to reduce the risk of West Nile virus.
