The Chaffee Housing Authority has received approval from Salida, Buena Vista, and Chaffee County to place two critical measures on the November 2024 ballot aimed at addressing the ongoing housing crisis in the region.

The first measure seeks to eliminate the current Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) spending limits, allowing the Housing Authority to retain state, local, and grant funding that exceeds the TABOR caps. This “De-Brucing” measure would provide the Chaffee Housing Authority with greater financial flexibility to tackle housing issues.

The second measure proposes a county-wide half-cent sales tax increase, with a 10-year sunset provision. The proposed tax is expected to generate approximately $3.5 million annually through 2035, which would be allocated to fund various Chaffee Housing Authority programs and projects focused on affordable housing.

These measures are part of a broader effort by the Chaffee Housing Authority to address the critical housing needs in Chaffee County, ensuring that the region can support its growing population and workforce.
