Chaffee County Public Health has reported a recent uptick in pertussis (whooping cough) cases in the area. Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory infection that begins with cold-like symptoms—runny nose, low-grade fever, and a mild cough. After about a week, it can progress to severe coughing fits, often accompanied by a distinct “whoop” sound as the person inhales following a coughing spell.
Two vaccines are available to protect against pertussis, and Chaffee County Public Health administers both. To schedule a vaccination, call 719-539-4510.
