April has been proclaimed National County Government Month by the Chaffee County Board of County Commissioners.

Commissioner Keith Baker sponsored the National County Government Month Proclamation and read it into the record at the April 5th regular meeting of the BOCC.

National County Government Month recognizes Chaffee County’s 230 staff and elected officials as fundamental to the community vibrancy and quality of life here, and draws attention to the services and programs local government has provided to support evolving local community needs over the County’s 160 year history.

In addition to supporting implementation of local programs and services within the County, Chaffee County Government and department leaders also frequently advise on regional, state, and federal initiatives and policies. Commissioner Baker serves in a leadership and liaison capacity as Chaffee County’s primary representative to the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the Colorado Counties Inc (CCI) groups.

Baker also represents Chaffee County through service on the NACo Public Lands Steering Committee (PLSC), representing the Western Interstate Region. The PLSC advises on all matters relating to federally-owned
public lands including federal land management programs, natural resource revenue sharing payments, payments in lieu of taxes, and property tax immunity concerns. Additionally, Baker chairs the San Luis Valley Transportation Planning Region (SLV TPR) regional planning commission as a representative to the Statewide Transportation Advisory Committee (STAC). STAC advises the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Transportation Commission on the needs of the transportation system in Colorado, and reviews and comments on all Regional Transportation Plans and the Statewide Transportation Plan.

In conjunction with National County Government Month, Chaffee County is launching its new social media platforms. The County will utilize these accounts to share information on County initiatives and programs, introduce the community to the County’s personnel and elected leaders, and highlight the positive impacts of County departments’ work at local, regional, state, and national levels.
