Two snowshoers and their dog were caught, buried, and killed by an avalanche near North Star Mountain, northwest of Hoosier Pass over the weekend.

On Saturday, a search began after the two were reported overdue.  Deputies from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, volunteers from the Summit County Rescue Group, and Flight for Life began searching areas west of Hoosier Pass yesterday. They found a recent avalanche and faint tracks in an area of interest on flank of North Star Mountain.  An avalanche rescue dog located both snowshoers and their dog, all of whom were completely buried by avalanche debris. All three were deceased.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is rating the avalanche danger in our area as considerable.
