To raise awareness of Colorado’s new hands-free cell phone law, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has launched the “Heads Up, Phones Down” campaign. The law, which went into effect on January 1st, prohibits the use of cell phones or other mobile devices while driving.
CDOT reports that using a mobile device while driving increases the risk of a crash by up to six times. In 2023, over 10,000 crashes in Colorado involved distracted drivers—equating to 28 crashes per day.
Key Details of the Law:
- First violation: $75 fine and two license points.
- First-time violators can have the charge dismissed by providing proof of purchasing a hands-free accessory.
Drivers are encouraged to use hands-free devices to comply with the law and prioritize road safety.
