Chaffee Chips has concluded its fifth year of wildfire mitigation efforts by clearing nearly 500 slash piles from Granite Parkway, northwest of Poncha Springs. This year, four events were held across the county, covering areas from Game Trail to Chalk Creek and Poncha Springs.
Program Impact:
- Five-Year Achievements:
- 860 landowners participated.
- Nearly 10,000 hours spent creating 2,770 slash piles.
Why It Matters:
Removing vegetation such as trees, limbs, and brush around structures significantly reduces the spread of wildfires and allows firefighters to protect homes and neighborhoods more effectively.
Chaffee Chips is a key component of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan spearheaded by the Forest Health Council. The plan’s ambitious goal is to treat 30,000 acres by 2030, aiming to halve the wildfire risk to vital community resources, including homes, power lines, and drinking water supplies.
This collective effort underscores Envision Chaffee County’s commitment to safeguarding the community from wildfire threats.
