The Interlaken Fire, burning 12 miles southwest of Leadville, has expanded to 585 acres with a containment rate of 5%. Efforts to control the fire continue as crews drop water and retardant to limit its spread. Currently, 140 personnel are assigned to the fire.
Fortunately, no structures, including those in the Interlaken Historic District, are threatened at this time. The fire began on Tuesday afternoon and has been attributed to an abandoned campfire. Officials have not yet identified those responsible for leaving the fire unattended. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has established a tip line to gather information about potential suspects. Anyone with information regarding campers with a fire near the Interlaken Resort between June 7th and 11th is urged to call 303-275-5266.
Pre-evacuation notices remain in effect for several areas. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has issued pre-evacuation orders for Lost Canyon and Cache Creek. Similarly, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office has issued pre-evacuation orders for individuals living and recreating in the Clear Creek Reservoir area north to the Chaffee/Lake County line.
Residents and visitors should be aware that smoke from the fire will continue to affect Chaffee County and northern Saguache County.
